| A draft amendment of China's Criminal Law unveiled Monday proposed reducing the number of crimes subject to the death penalty, Xinhua reported today. The draft amendment was submitted to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress for its first reading. It is the eighth amendment to the country's 1997 version of the Criminal Law. China currently lists 68 crimes that are punishable by the death penalty. The draft amendment eliminates capital punishment for 13 non-violent economics-related offences. If the amendment passes, it will reduce the number of crimes eligible for the death penalty by 19.1%. |

| Among the proposed crimes to be taken off the list are: smuggling out of the country prohibited cultural relics, gold, silver, and other precious metals and rare animals and their products; carrying out fraudulent activities with financial bills; carrying out fraudulent activities with letters of credit; falsely issuing exclusive value-added tax invoices to defraud export tax refunds or to offset taxes; forging or selling forged exclusive value-added tax invoices; teaching crime-committing methods; and robbing ancient cultural ruins. |

| Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., also known as Foxconn, plans to open at least 10 large electronics stores in the Shanghai area by the end of 2011, under a partnership initiated last year with Germany retailer Metro AG, the Wall Street Journal reported. The first stores will open later this year. Hon Hai also intends to open 45 to 50 branches of Cybermart, a small retail chain it purchased a decade ago but which has seen little growth. Louis Woo, a senior Hon Hai executive, said the company plans to open another 200 electronics booths in hypermarkets in Chinese cities, while also providing funding for Chinese employees who return to their hometowns to start small shops through which Hon Hai can distribute products. |

| A drug to treat the Ebola virus is reported to be one step closer after US scientists were given permission to conduct human trials, BBC reported. Clinical trials involving a small group of human volunteers have been approved after a new drug was proven to be effective on monkeys. |

| Scientists have found a way of making potatoes healthier with more nutrients -- by zapping them with electricity, the Daily Mail reported. The electricity tricked potatoes into producing a rush of antioxidants credited with keeping the body and brain healthy. Whole potatoes were dipped in salty water to help them conduct electricity and then zapped with a small charge for up to half an hour. Subsequent tests revealed that antioxidant levels had increased by up to 60%. Scaled up to an industrial level, the apparently inexpensive process could give potatoes a whole new image. Other tests in the same study found that using ultrasound on potatoes had a similarly beneficial effect. Antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables are considered to be of nutritional importance in the prevention of chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, various cancers, diabetes and neurological diseases. |
