China Opens Xinzheng as International Airport

An airport in Zhengzhou, capital of central China's Henan Province, has become the 21st international airport in the country that can accommodate foreign planes.

Opening of the Xinzheng Airport as an international airport was recently approved by the State Council, China's highest governing body.

Experts said the move will be conducive to developing China's vast western regions and will help China become more involved in economic globalization.

The Xinzheng Airport, which went into operation in 1997, takes a leading position among all the airports in the province in size, cargo and transportation capacity.

The airport has air links with Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and some 50 cities in the country.

Previously, chartered passenger planes from Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Russia occasionally landed at the airport, making it yield good profits.

Airlines from Japan, Singapore and Thailand have shown keen interest in the new international airport, officials said.
