The UN envoy for Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, will begin his Middle East visit Saturday to make preparation for convening an international peace conference on Syria, said a UN spokesman here Friday.

"Mr. Brahimi will start his tour to the region tomorrow, traveling to Egypt as his first stop," said Martin Nesirky, spokesperson for UN secretary-general, at a daily news briefing.

During his two-day stay in Egypt, Brahimi will meet the Egyptian foreign minister to discuss preparations for Geneva II conference in Switzerland, said Nesirky, who added that the subsequent stops of the special envoy will be announced as his trip proceeds.

Brahimi's deputy, Nasser al-Kidwa, will also head for the region, the spokesman said. "Both of them are engaging with regional governments to ensure that the Geneva II conference could take place as soon as possible and would be successful."

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has indicated that Geneva II conference will most probably be held in late November.

The first international meeting on Syria was held in the Swiss city in June 2012, resulting in the endorsement of the Geneva Communique which provides a framework for political transition in the war-torn Middle East country.
