Iran will support Syria to the end, a commander of the powerful Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) was quoted as saying by local media on Thursday.

The commander of the Quds Force of the IRGC, Major General Qasem Soleimani, said the United States has resorted to various ploys to topple Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, ranging from exerting political pressure on Damascus to finding excuses of alleged use of chemical weapons by the Damascus government against it own people, Tehran Times daily reported.

However, the United States would fail to achieve any of its goals in Syria and the Islamic republic will support Syria, as the resistance front against Israel, to the end, said Soleimani during a speech to Iran's Assembly of Experts.

The Quds Force, alternatively Qods, is a special unit of Iran's IRGC responsible for "extraterritorial" missions of the Corps.

Addressing the Assembly of Experts, which comprises 86 Mujtahids (Islamic scholars) and is responsible for electing and removing the country's supreme leader and supervising his activities, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Wednesday that Iran will continue efforts to prevent a possible military action against Syria by the United States.

In the past days, the Islamic republic, as a major ally of Assad's government in the region, has geared up diplomatic efforts in order for the probable strike on Syria to be prevented.

The U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday passed a resolution to authorize a military strike against Syria over the alleged use of chemical weapons by the government forces against civilians.?
