Russia's new President Vladimir Putin submitted to the State Duma a bill, nominating former President Dmitry Medvedev as prime minister in the new government, the lower house's speaker Sergei Naryshkin said on Monday.

Before the country's presidential election, Putin has vowed to name Medvedev as prime minister if elected.

The nomination is expected to be approved by the State Duma at an extraordinary plenary session of the house on Tuesday.

Currently, First Vice Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov is the acting head of the Russian government.

Medvedev had served as first deputy prime minister from 2005 to 2008 and as president from 2008 to 2012. He was the third and youngest Russian head of state since the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s.
