Dilma Rousseff, presidential candidate for Brazil's ruling Workers Party (PT), has 44 percent of valid votes in Sunday's elections with around 60 percent of the vote counted, Brazil's Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) said.

Sunday's partial TSE result, which covered around 81 million voters, showed Jose Serra, of the Brazil Social Democratic Party ( PSDB), with 37 percent of the vote, close to Rousseff. Marina Silva, representing the Green Party (PV), had 20 percent of the vote.

If no candidate scores more than 50 percent, the vote will go to a run-off on Oct. 31.

Nearly 139 million people were registered to vote, choosing the president, 27 governors, 81 senators, 513 federal deputies and 1, 059 deputies in regional assemblies.
