Greece's main opposition party leader asked President Karolos Papoulias Friday noon for an urgent meeting of the National Council of Political Leaders to discuss the Greek debt crisis.

"We are in front of critical decisions that will influence our present and our future," Antonis Samaras said during the meeting with Papoulias.

Samaras claims the socialist government should not make the decision on the terms of the financial aid package Greece will receive from eurozone country members and the International Monetary Fund.

According to Greek media reports, the deal is almost complete and the Greek government will announce the additional measures to tackle the debt crisis through the EU-IMF mechanism on Sunday, after May 1st protests.

“We should all give this battle together. All governments made mistakes. I bear a part of responsibility also since I was a member of a government for years,” Papoulias said during the meeting with Samaras, suggesting Greek opposition parties will follow Portugal's path, where the government received the support of the main opposition party to proceed to reforms in facing a similar economic crisis.
