Volcanic activity under the Eyjafjallajokull glacier in southern Iceland appeared less powerful, according to information from Reykjavik on Wednesday.

"The seismologists in the helicopter which flew over the volcano now believe that the activity of the eruption and potential breaks in volcanic activity reduce," said the Icelandic national broadcaster RUV.

The gas emission from the volcano has become significantly less powerful, the report added.

The chief epidemiologist of Iceland and the Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management recommended people use dust masks near the eruption where there is visible ash fall.

But there will be no need for masks in the capital city Reykjavik, which is not at risk for ash fall. Wind is turning steady west and southwesterly, said RUV.

News from the Faculty of Earth Sciences at University of Iceland said Tuesday night the latest result from GPS stations around Eyjafjallajokull showed deflation of the eruption. There is no movements associated with the Katla volcano, one of the active volcanoes in Iceland.
