An explosion derailed eight cars of a cargo train in Russia's North Caucasian republic of Dagestan early Sunday, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.

The incident took place at around 3:40 a.m. Moscow time (2340 GMT Saturday) near the Inchkhe station in Dagestan's Karabudakhkentsky district, a transport officer told the Itar-Tass.

Eight cars were reportedly derailed, five of them overturned and one was on fire. Some 300 meters of railway tracks were destroyed.

According to the preliminary investigation, no casualties were reported in the incident.

The train was traveling from Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, to Moscow. Another passenger train from Tyumen to Baku was scheduled to pass the spot at 6:00 a.m. Moscow time (0200 GMT), which has been suspended at the Dagestani capital Makhachkala, reported the Itar-Tass.

Law enforcement officers were working at the scene, local police said.

Twelve people, including nine police officers, were killed Wednesday in two blasts in the Dagestani town of Kizlyar.

Last November, a passenger train enroute from Moscow to St. Petersburg was derailed on the border between the Tver and Novgorod regions, some 400 km northwest of Moscow, killing at least 26 people and injuring nearly 100 others.
