Arab countries bloc at the United Nations started talks for submitting a draft resolution, on the demarcation of the future Palestinian statehood, to the UN Security Council, a Palestinian official said Thursday.

The demarcation would be on the border areas that Israel has occupied in June 1967, which includes the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem that the Palestinians recognize as their future capital, said Saeb Erekat, the chief Palestinian negotiator.

He added the decision was taken by the Arab countries after peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians hit a deadlock for more than one year.

"The Arab states, with discussions underway, would be ready to go to the Security Council" and snatch the resolution on the borders, Erekat said. He did not reveal when the draft resolution would be submitted to the UN Security Council.

When Israel launched a military operation in Gaza in December 2008, the negotiations stopped. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas refused to resume the talks, citing the settlements that eat up lands the Palestinians want for their future statehood.

Recently, the United States stepped up its efforts to revive the moribund Middle East peace process, with the Palestinians are frustrated since Washington could not oblige Israel to halt all settlement activities.
