An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said Tuesday further sanctions against Iran over its controversial nuclear program will be futile.

"About sanctions we have already announced our views many times, " Ramin Mehman-Parast said at his weekly press conference, adding that "we do not consider sanctions, threats and such kind of wrong actions to be useful."

"Iran has continuously obeyed the International Atomic Energy Agency's rules and regulations," he said, adding that imposing further sanctions on Tehran will not stop it from moving towards independence.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Monday the United States has been discussing with other major powers on sanctions against Iran, and that the aim of the sanctions is to pressurize the Iranian government and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Mehman-Parast also criticized U.S. supports for the recent riots in Iran, saying they were politically motivated, and slammed France's stand on the unrests.

According to Iran's English-language Press TV, sporadic clashes were seen in some parts of downtown Tehran on Dec. 27, in which eight people were killed in anti-government protests.

Iran has said that foreign interference was behind the unrests in Tehran and other cities in Iran.
