At least 20 people were killed and 40 others injured in a collision between two buses in Bangladesh's central Faridpur district, some 101 km away from the capital Dhaka, on Sunday afternoon, Local Police said.

Chief of Police at the Bhanga sub-district under Faridpur, Marfat Ullah, told Xinhua that the fatal road accident took place on the highway connecting the Bangladeshi capital and southern Barisal city, some 180 km away of Dhaka.

He said the buses collided at around 4:45 p.m. local time and flipped over into roadside ditch.

Ullah confirmed the death of 20 people, saying the toll might rise as some of the injured passengers were rescued in critical condition.

Bangladesh has one of the highest fatality rate for road accidents in the world. According to official statistics, more than 10,000 people are killed in various accidents every year.
