Tropical storm Ketsana kills at least 11 in Vietnam

The tropical storm "Ketsana" killed at least 11, injured 12 and left three others missing in the central provinces of Vietnam, the Vietnam News Agency reported on Tuesday.

The storm is battering central and highland provinces of Vietnam namely Binh Dinh, Quang Nam, Yen Bai, Kon Tum, Dak Lak. Among them, Binh Dinh and Kon Tum are the worst-hit provinces, according to provincial steering committees on flood and storm prevention.

In central Binh Dinh province, the storm destroyed over 100 houses and damaged over 2,200 others. 42 fishing boats were sunk. More than 6,400 hectares of rice and agricultural crops were damaged, over 100 hectares of shrimp cultivation was flooded. The storm caused disconnection of electricity lines and road transportation.

In central highland province of Kon Tum, hundreds of houses and schools were severely destroyed. Thousands of crops were submerged.

The provincial authorities are cooperating with the joint forces of military, police, coast guard, and health personnel to rescue trapped victims. Urgent evacuation has been made to those who lost shelters in the storm.

Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai on Monday sent an urgent message ordering authorities in central provinces to move any residents living in dangerous districts to safer areas. It also urged schools to close to ensure the safety of students.
