Cows produce 'human' milk
April-6-2011

Chinese scientists have genetically modified cattle to produce "human" milk with the same nutritional properties as breast milk.

The researchers, writing in the Public Library of Science One journal, said they have successfully created cows that produce lysozyme - a human protein - by implanting genetically modified embryos into surrogate cows. Lysozyme is found in human breast milk and helps boost babies' immunities.

"The milk tastes stronger than normal milk," said Professor Li Ning (李寧)?, lead research author and director of the State Key Laboratories for AgroBiotechnology at the China Agricultural University.

He thinks the research has huge potential to benefit human health.

The researchers believe that milk from these herds of 300 cows can provide an alternative to human breast milk and formula milk for babies.

"We aim to commercialise some research in this area in coming three years. For the 'human-like milk,' 10 years or maybe more time will be required to finally pour this enhanced milk into the consumer's cup."

"So far, the 'human' milk produced by GM cows is just 70-80 percent same as human breast milk, lacking a?special protein in human milk that helps boost babies' intelligence", Pf. Li said.
