Harry Potter finale gets Trafalgar Square premiere
March-3-2011

The world premiere of the eighth and final installment in the Harry Potter movie franchise will be held in London's Trafalgar Square, a far bigger venue than the usual.

The cast and crew of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" will begin the evening of July 7 on the red carpet at the historic landmark in central London before moving to nearby Leicester Square for the screening.

Leicester Square is the smaller space normally used for London film premieres.

"For the last decade we've been gripped by the on-screen battle between Harry Potter and his arch enemy Lord Voldemort and this is one of the most eagerly awaited films in history," said London mayor Boris Johnson.

"As befits a great British triumph, I can think of no better venue than the iconic surroundings of Trafalgar Square in which to stage the most spectacular of send offs," he added in a statement.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is directed by David Yates and produced by David Heyman, David Barron and Potter creator J.K. Rowling.

Rowling's seven-book series about the boy wizard and his adventures at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry has sold more than 400 million copies.

Combined with her earnings from the blockbuster movie franchise, Rowling has been dubbed the "first billion-dollar author" by Forbes.

The seven movies screened to date have amassed around $6.4 billion at the box office. The final Rowling novel was divided into two parts by Warner Bros., the studio which made the films.

The final installment hits theatres on July 15.
