Beijing tightens supervision on fireworks stalls

About 560 licensed firework stalls in Beijing are being monitored with closed-circuit television by the municipal production safety authority.

The municipal bureau of production safety said the video recordings could be used help investigations in case of accidents.

On Thursday, the first day of China's Lunar New Year, more than 20,000 street cleaners swept a total of 2,380 tonnes of fireworks debris off the the streets.

People within Beijing's Fifth Ring Road can set off fireworks all day on the Chinese New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, which fell on Wednesday and Thursday, but from the second day of the Lunar New Year fireworks are prohibited from midnight to 7 a.m. until the Lantern Festival, the 15th day of the first lunar month.

The municipal bureau of production safety said it had issued firework sales permits to 1,852 retail stalls this year, down by 23.4 percent from last year. The stalls offer a variety of 1,500 fireworks.
