China began building its high-speed rail network in 2007. The country now has the world's most bullet trains running at least 250 kilometers per hour.

China's first train running more than 350 kilometers per hour connected Beijing and Tianjin and was opened in 2008. It was built using technology pioneered in Germany.

In 2009, China opened the world's longest high-speed rail line between Wuhan and Guangzhou. Earlier in July, another high-speed rail line was opened between the economic hub Shanghai and Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province.

It set world speed records and was built using domestic technology. But those records were short-lived, with trains along the Shanghai-Hangzhou rail line setting a new speed record by clocking 416 kilometers per hour. Another 17-hundred kilometers of high-speed rail is still under construction, including the one that will connect Beijing and Shanghai.
