Death toll rises to 52 in Philippines massacre

Six more bodies were recovered on Wednesday in southern Philippines' Maguindanao province, bring the death toll in Monday's massacre to 52. Victims including women and 18 journalists, were brutally killed.

 

Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Wednesday declared a national day of mourning for the victims.The killings in Maguindanao province have been called the worst politically motivated violence in recent Philippine history.

Philippine authorities, under intense public pressure said that they are investigating a member of a powerful clan allied with the government. The massacre has been strongly condemned around the world. U.N.Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called it a "heinous crime".
