23 people, including eight infants, have died in a massive landslide in North China's Shanxi province. The landslide buried part of a village. Shoddy home construction may have played a role in the devastation.

Local authorities say the landslide covered an area of about 20,000 meters, which is as large as 30 soccer fields. Six houses were swept away in the village of Zhongyang County. None of the people in the homes survived. County officials say the victims were migrant workers, who were employed at a nearby coal mine, and their families.

Geological experts say the accident was caused by a collapse from weak soil. Police and officials from the provincial work safety and land and resources authorities are investigating the incident.
