Five newborns were killed on Saturday after a short circuit sparked a fire in a hospital maternity in northern Indian.
Five other newborns were rescued from the fire, including one that suffered burns. All the babies were under a week old.
One of the newborn babies who survived a fire is seen at the state-run Rajendra hospital in Patiala, some 48 kilometers (30 miles) south of Chandigarh, India, Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009.
An investigation into the incident has been ordered by the government, and victims' families are set to receive compensation of more than 2-thousand dollars for each baby.
