Gabriel Heinze's goal in the sixth minute secured Argentina's?victory over Nigeria and also ensured that Maradona's return to the World Cup stage -16 years since his last cap against Nigeria in the United States - was a winning one.

Gabriel Heinze scored the only goal of the game as Argentina began their bid for a third World Cup success with a 1-0 victory over Nigeria in the Group B clash at Johannesburg's Ellis Park.

Lionel Messi was at his inspirational best as Argentina dominated the match and they had a host of chances to extend their lead but were foiled on numerous occasions by inspired Nigeria keeper Vincent Enyeama.

In another Group B clash, the energetic South Korea earned a convincing 2-0 win over the 2004 European champions Greece.

As the first Asian team coming into action in South Africa,?South Korea has shown impressive qualities through the match. It shouldn't be a surprise if the 2002 World Cup semifinalist proceed to the knockout stage with Argentina from Group B.

In Group C, goalkeeper Robert Green's error gifts the US an equaliser as an unconvincing England side are held 1-1 in their opening World Cup game.

Fabio Capello's side are one of the favourites in the tournament. However, the Three Lions may find after the match?that their pursuit for the World Cup title won't be a smooth sail.

England took an early lead through skipper Steven Gerrard but were pegged back after goalkeeper Robert Green inexplicably allowed Clint Dempsey's speculative 40th-minute shot to escape his grasp and roll into the back of the net.

Fabio Capello's side dominated the second half but were ultimately frustrated by a resolute US defence which held firm despite some intense late pressure.
