FC Shakhtar Donetsk, Arsenal FC and AS Roma claimed the last UEFA Champions League round of 16 places on offer as the group stage concluded on Wednesday.

German record champions Bayern Munich swept Swiss double winner Basel 3-0 as Bayern's Frenchmen midfielder Franck Ribery scored twice on Wednesday.

The game was meaningless for the Bavarians as they were already qualified for the round of sixteen whereas Basel had to win to maintain their chances. For that reason Basel started aggressive and highly motivated against reserved Bayern.

As the match progressed, the Bavarians took over control to open the scoring at the 35th minute. Bayern defender craved out a ball at the end line to assist Frenchmen Franck Ribery inside penalty area who curled the ball into the open goal.

Only two minutes later Bayern midfielder Anatoliy Tymoshchuk volleyed a prolonged corner from the right side to double the score.

Four minutes into the second half, Bayern broke Basel spell when they slotted the third goal of the match through Frechmen Ribery who exploited a cross from the right wing with a well placed shot from the penalty line to kick Basel out of UEFA Champions League.

Bayern finishes on first position in group E with 15 points followed by Rome with 10 points, Basel with six points and Cluij with four.

"We started weak, but we earned a lot more confidence with the first goal, from that point on we utilized our scoring opportunities," Bayern captain Mark van Bommel said after the match.
