German Bundesliga runners-up Schalke suffered a surprising 2-1 defeat against Hannover on Saturday. Bremen outclassed Cologone 4-2 to earn their first victory of the season.

Meanwhile, Wolfsburg gave away a 3-0 lead against Mainz to lose 3-4 while Hamburg turned around at Frankfurt to win 3-1.

Schalke controlled the match from kick-off at the home Veltins Arena, but it was Hannover that surprisingly opened the scoring within 31 minutes into the match. Defender Konstantin Rausch marked his second of the season with a left footed curling shot. The lead gave Hannover upwind while Schalke remained shocked and unconcentrated in the first half.

After the break, Hannover again overcame Schalke's unorganized defence and striker Mohammed Abdellaoue doubled the lead only four minutes into second half.

Schalke was only able to shorthand the score to 1-2 at the 83rd minute by midfielder Jermaine Jones who headed home a set by piece situation from goal area.

Schalke suffered their second defeat at their second Bundesliga match while Hannover gained their second victory.

"My squad was unstable, especially our defence that led to failures and finally to goals. But, I think that my team showed will", Schalke manager Felix Magath said after the defeat.

Bremen started as expected offensively minded while Cologne lurked for counters. With 33 minutes into the match referee Marco Fritz awarded Bremen a penalty after Cologne midfielder Petit fouled midfielder and German international Marko Marin inside penalty area.

Bremen team captain utilized the opportunity to open the scoring with a hammer into the roof of the net to make it 1-0 on the scoreboards.

Only three minutes later, Bremen youngster and new signing Marko Arnautovic nodded home a cross at the back post to double the lead.

German international and Cologne striker Lukas Podolski shortened the deficit to 1-2 by a header from ten meters inside left.

Both teams retracted and lurked for counters. Bremen picked up where they left off when striker Hugo Almeida poked home a cross by Marko Arnautovic to extend Bremen lead to 3-1 at the 74th minute.

Not enough, youngster striker Marko Arnautovic scored his second goal for Bremen to make it 4-1 on the scoreboards at the 91st minute. Cologne defender Kevin McKenna marked the final 2-4 score by header.

Frankfurt and Hamburg needed some time to find into the match. With 37 minutes into first half Frankfurt midfielder Patrick Ochs shocked Hamburg with the opener. Ochs shot from 19 meter was deflected unsaveable by teammate Halil Altintop. Hamburg recovered from the deficit at the 61st minute when defender Joris Mathijsen nodded home a Ze Roberto corner kick.

Hamburg striker Ruud van Nistelrooy turned the match around at the 81st minute when he headed home a corner kick by Ze Roberto at the last post.

Striker Jose Paolo Guerrero wrapped the second victory for Hamburg when he extended the score to 3-1 seconds before final whistle.

Wolfsburg started highly motivated against Mainz after they suffered a last minutes loss at the Bundesliga opener last week.

Their offensively-oriented soccer was rewarded at the 23rd minute when Wolfsburgs top striker Edin Dzeko opened the scoring into bottom left. Edin Dzeko needed only four minutes to double the lead. He is now Wolfsburg best striker with 59 goals for the "Wolves".

Mainz was unable to put up some resistance so that Wolfsburg midfielder new signing Diego had no problems to overcome Mainz defence to make it 3-0 30 minutes into the match.

Nine minutes later, Mainz got one back with a lucky goal by loanee striker Morten Rasmussen.

Mainz recovered from the shock during the first half when they needed only three minutes into the second half to make it 2-3 through midfielder Elkin Soto.

Mainz sniffed the sensation and equalized at the 58th minute. Austrian international and Mainz striker Andre Schuerrle's hammer from 25 meters remained unstoppable for Wolfsburg goalie Diego Benaglio. To make it worse for Wolfsburg, Mainz substitute striker Adam Szalai marked the 4-3 decider five minutes before final whistle.

On the same day, Hoffenheim earned their second victory after they defeated St. Pauli 1-0 with a late goal at the 87th minute by defender Isaac Vorsah. Freiburg defeated Nuremberg 2-1 thanks to new signing striker Papiss Cisse who turned around a 1-0 deficit with two goals.
