Chile's Fernando Gonzales, ranked 12th in the ATP Tour, announced on Wednesday that he will not play the Masters Tournament 1000 in Madrid due to a right knee injury.

Gonzalez also said that he expected to return to the court at the French Open which is scheduled to start on May 23.

"Fernando prefers not to hurry his recovery to defend again the semifinal he reached in 2009 at the Roland Garros", according to Gonzalez's official website.

Gonzalez had been forced to withdraw last week from the Rome Masters 1000 due to injury.
