The opening ceremony of the 5th East Asian Games is bound to be the most unique one if not the most high-teched or most expensive.

The opening ceremony on Saturday night will be put on an aqua stage in the landmark Victoria Harbor with vessels parade, lighting effects and fireworks display along the shore.

"I think the most fascinating thing about a performance is the whole new idea, the uniqueness. It is a challenge and yet the key to success," said the opening ceremony mastermind Lu Jiankang, who was the executive director of the Beijing Olympic Games opening ceremony.

Since the ceremony is not limited in some stadium, Lu said, it would attract the most spectators than any other previous ones.

Hong Kong Olympic Committee President Timothy Fok expects the ceremony put a good start to the nine-day regional event.

"A good beginning is half done. Although the hugely successful opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics put some pressure on us, we are confident that ours will reflect the best side of Hong Kong, " he said.

Naturally, the would-be participants are the most expectants among all.

"I heard that we will be on a ship. It is so different from the traditional ones and creative. I am really looking forward to it," said Chinese delegation spokesperson Guo Jianjun.

"I think they make good use of Hong Kong's natural conditions, which may offer some experience to future ceremony planners," he added.

The East Asian Games attracted about 2,300 athletes from nine countries and regions to compete in 22 sports.
