Beijing to strenthen highway safety ahead of Olympics
Adjust font size:

Speeders and drink-drivers will be the targets of an intensive crackdown on road traffic offences ahead of the Olympic Games in August, announced by the Beijing municipal authority.

The two-month campaign will see around the clock police checks on motorists and one radar speed gun every 20 kilometers on 14 city highways, including three yet to open, said Beijing Traffic Management Bureau spokesman Zhang Jingchun.

The campaign, starting on Aug. 1, will focus on speeding, drink-driving, overloading, non-use of seat-belts, illegal parking near toll gates and driver fatigue.

The bureau also unveiled emergency traffic control plans that require the closure of highways in the case of heavy fog or flooding during the Olympic Games.
