A report published at the beginning of the year that was only recently read found that 75 percent of Chinese are in state of "sub-health," Changjiang Daily reports. Some 200 million people are overweight or obese, including a quarter of male students in urban areas. The obesity rate among China's youth has risen nearly 50 percent since 2000. The report also said 160 million people suffer high blood pressure, while another 160 million show excess fat in their blood. It also showed a rising percentage of youngsters with near-sightedness, from 20 percent in 2000 to 31 percent today.

The report attributed Chinese people's obesity problems to their reluctance to be active. Less than 30 percent of Chinese students participate in sports in their spare time, choosing instead to surf the Internet, play games, listen to music or watch TV. The report found that only 6.3 percent of Chinese students exercise two hours a day, compared to 21.3 percent of Japanese students.
