Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed deep sadness Tuesday?at the deaths and suffering caused by the wildfires that have been raging outside Moscow.

Media reports say dozens of people have died because of the fires, which follow record-breaking temperatures in parts of Russia as well as prolonged drought conditions.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Mr. Ban offered his condolences to the families of those killed or injured.

"The Secretary-General is aware of the tremendous efforts being undertaken by the Government of the Russian Federation to bring the situation under control," the statement noted. "He reaffirms the commitment of the United Nations to assist in any way in this effort should it be required."
