Beijing's subway system was disrupted briefly during Monday morning's rush hour after a man jumped onto the tracks at a busy subway station.

The man, in his 30s, jumped off the platform onto the tracks at Tian'anmen East Station, near Tian'anmen Square in central Beijing, on Line 1 at 7:55 a.m., the Beijing Subway Company said.

The man suffered slight head injuries and was taken to hospital. Doctors said his injuries are not life threatening.

The line's train services were immediately halted and did not resume until 8:11 a.m.

Loudspeakers on the trains asked passengers to wait patiently and not to panic.

Some passengers, however, sweating in the Beijing summer inside jam-packed carriages, were angry at the man.

A number of trains running on the line reversed.

Entry to Fuxingmen, Jianguomen and Guomao stations was temporarily restricted.

In July last year, a man in his 20s jumped onto the tracks at a different station of the same line and was killed when a train hit him.

Line 1 and Line 2 were Beijing's first two subway lines. They are also the city's busiest subway lines.

The two lines are not equipped with shield doors.
