Chen Yunlin, president of the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), said compatriots on both sides of the Straits have time again helped each other in time of disasters.

"The blood relations between our people have proven blood is thicker than water," he said while visiting the mountainous village in this central county of Taiwan. Seventeen houses in the village of 45 households were buried in early August by landslides caused by Typhoon Morakot, which killed more than 600 people in the island. The mainland donated about 780 million yuan ($114.23)and relief materials to Taiwan after the disaster.
