Ministry of Health Press Release (May 14) on SARS

The Press Office under the Ministry of Health published Wednesday afternoon a press release on the latest SARS situation on the Chinese mainland. On May 14, 11 provinces reported new SARS cases, of which, 7 provinces reported both new cases and new suspected cases, and 4 provinces reported new suspected cases, and the remaining 20 provinces reported no cases.

By 10:00 am May 14, 25 provinces have reported SARS cases. So far, Hainan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Qinghai provinces, Tibet and Xinjiang Uygur autonomous regions have not found any cases. Of the provinces having reported suspected or diagnosed SARS cases, Heilongjiang still reports no diagnosed case; Anhui, Gansu, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Hubei, Hunan reported less than 10 diagnosed cases respectively; Ningxia, Zhejiang, Liaoning, Fujian, Chongqing, Jiangxi and Shandong reported less than 5 diagnosed cases respectively. Fujian has reported no new case for 36 days; Hunan has reported no new case for 23 days; Shandong has reported no new case for 20 days; Guangxi has reported no new case for 12 days; Ningxia has reported no new case for 11 days; Jiangxi has reported no new case for 10 days, Hubei has reported no new case for 8 days; Henan and Chongqing have reported no new cases for 7 days respectively; and Zhejiang and Shaanxi have reported no new cases for 6 and 5 days respectively.

From 10:00 am May 13 to 10:00 am May 14, China reported 55 new cases, 46 patients recovered and 5 deaths. Of the 55 cases, 31 used to be suspected but now are confirmed as SARS patients.

Of these figures:

Beijing reported 39 new cases (of which 18 used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients), 8 patients recovered and 5 deaths
Tianjin reported 4 new cases (of which 3 used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients)
Hebei reported 3 new cases (all of which used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients), and 5 patients recovered
Shanxi reported 4 new cases (all of which used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients), and 23 patients recovered
Jilin reported 3 new cases (of which 1 used to be suspected but now confirmed as a SARS patient)
Anhui reported 1 patient recovered
Guangdong reported 1 new case (which used to be suspected but now confirmed as a SARS patient), and 5 patients recovered.
Sichuan reported 1 new case (which used to be suspected but now confirmed as a SARS patient), and 2 patients recovered
Ningxia reported 2 patients recovered.

By 10:00 am May 14, China had a total of 5,124 SARS cases (947 medical workers), which included 1,811 patients who had recovered and been discharged from hospital and 267 deaths. Now 3,046 patients are receiving treatment in hospitals.

From 10:00 am May 13 to 10:00 am May 14, China also reported 95 new suspected cases, including 51 from Beijing, 3 from Tianjin, 10 from Hebei, 9 from Shanxi, 1 each from Inner Mongolia, Shanghai, Hubei, Sichuan and Shaanxi; 2 from Jilin, and 15 from Guangdong.

From 10:00 am May 13 to 10:00 am May 14, China also reported 127 misdiagnosed suspected cases, of which, 63 from Beijing, 34 from Guangdong, 15 from Shanxi, 4 from Shanghai, 2 each from Tianjin, Anhui, Sichuan and Shaanxi, and 1 each from Hebei, Inner Mongolia and Henan. By 10:00 am May 14, China had a total of 2,349 suspected cases.
