Ministry of Health Press Release (May 10) on SARS

The Press Office under the Ministry of Health published Saturday afternoon a press release on the latest SARS situation on the Chinese mainland. On May 10, 13 provinces reported new SARS cases, of which, 8 provinces reported both new cases and new suspected cases, 1 province reported new cases and 4 provinces reported new suspected cases, and the remaining 18 provinces reported no cases.

By 10:00 am May 10, 25 provinces have reported SARS cases. So far, Hainan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Qinghai provinces, Tibet Autonomous Region and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region have not found any cases. Of the provinces having reported suspected or diagnosed SARS cases, Heilongjiang still reports no diagnosed case; Anhui, Shanghai, Gansu, Jiangsu, Hubei, Hunan and Ningxia reported less than 10 diagnosed cases respectively; Zhejiang, Fujian, Chongqing, Liaoning, Jiangxi and Shandong reported less than 5 diagnosed cases respectively. Fujian Province has had no reported case for 32 successive days while Hunan Province has reported no new cases for 19 days; Shandong Province has reported no new case for 16 days; Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has reported no new cases for 8 days; Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region has reported no new cases for 7 days; Jiangxi Province has reported no new case for 6 days.

From 10:00 am May 9 to 10:00 am May 10, China reported 85 new cases, 38 patients recovered and 5 deaths. Of the 85 cases, 49 used to be suspected cases and now confirmed as SARS patients.

Of these figures:

Beijing reported 54 new cases (of which 24 used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients), 7 patients recovered and 2 deaths
Tianjin reported 8 new cases (of which 7 used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients) and 1 death
Hebei reported 1 new case
Shanxi reported 11 new cases (of which 8 used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients), 12 recovered and 1 death
Inner Mongolia reported 6 new cases (all of which used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients) and 2 patients recovered
Jilin reported 1 death
Shanghai reported 1 new case (which used to be suspected but now confirmed as a SARS patient)
Jiangsu reported 1 new case (which used to be suspected but now confirmed as a SARS patient)
Anhui reported 1 new case
Guangdong reported 2 new cases (all of which used to be suspected but now are confirmed as SARS patients) and 17 patients recovered

By 10:00 am May 10, China had a total of 4,884 SARS cases (931 medical workers), which included 1,620 patients who had recovered and been discharged from hospital and 235 deaths. Currently, a total of 3,029 patients are receiving medical treatment in hospital.

From 10:00 am May 9 to 10:00 am May 10, China also reported 137 new suspected cases, including 45 from Beijing, 5 from Tianjin, 13 from Hebei, 18 from Shanxi, 7 from Inner Mongolia, 3 from Shanghai, 1 each from Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Henan, 41 from Guangdong, and 1 each from Chongqing and Sichuan.

From 10:00 am May 9 to 10:00 am May 10, China reported 128 misdiagnosed suspected cases, of which, 49 from Beijing, 31 from Guangdong, 19 from Shanxi, 12 from Inner Mongolia, 4 from Shanghai, 3 from Tianjin, 2 each from Jiangsu, Henan, Shaanxi, Ningxia, 1 each from Hebei, Hunan. By 10:00 am May 10, China had a total of 2,526 suspected cases.
